With warm weather comes family fun on California’s waterways. Ensuring that children can enjoy the state’s lakes and rivers this summer includes teaching them the skills they need to stay safe in the water.
For over two decades, DWR, State Water Project (SWP) Contractors, and regional aquatic recreation programs have partnered to offer free Aquatic Adventure Camps to the public. These week-long camps provide water safety education to communities served by the State Water Project. Designed for children ages 8–12, the camps teach life-saving skills, promote outdoor recreation, and help reduce drowning risks, particularly in underserved communities.
Aquatic Adventure Camps support DWR’s core goals of increasing public safety and awareness of California’s water infrastructure and natural resources. The camps provide an opportunity for youth to connect with the state’s water systems while learning about safety, conservation, and environmental stewardship. During the camps, participants learn swimming techniques, CPR, rescue breathing, first aid, boating basics, and health-related safety such as sun protection and hydration. The program empowers youth with the confidence and knowledge to stay safe in and around water.
“Aquatic Adventure Camp is a fun, hands-on experience where young kids learn the importance of water safety while creating unforgettable summer memories. We provide a safe, enriching environment that helps children build confidence, stay active, make new friends, and gain life-saving skills like swimming and water safety,” says Catalina Lemire, pool manager for the City of Pittsburgh. “Offered at no cost, the camp eases the burden on local families by providing a meaningful, reliable summer option for their children. Thanks to strong community partnerships and support from the City of Pittsburg, every child—regardless of background—has access to this empowering opportunity.”
The success of the Aquatic Adventure Camps is made possible through strong multi-agency partnerships. In 2025, DWR renewed its partnerships with the City of Pittsburgh and East Bay Regional Park District. In total, eight camps served approximately 200 youths this summer. According to participating parents and guardians, children leave the program more confident, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about water safety and outdoor recreation.
“This program is the highlight of my daughter’s summer. This is our second year attending. Last year at the start of camp she did not pass the swimming test, but this year she passed! I don’t think she would have without the skills practiced in camp. Swimming is not only fun but a life skill,” said a parent/guardian of a camp participant. This free camp provides an opportunity for kids to learn these skills in a fun environment. I would normally not be able to afford to put my daughter in this type of camp. The fact that we can send her for free means the world to my family. Thank you so much and we look forward to next year!”
With a few months of sunny days still remaining, it’s never too late to dive into water safety. Visit DWR’s Water Safety Program page to learn more or order materials to use with your family.
