Groundwater Awareness Week

Join DWR during Groundwater Awareness Week March 10-16 as we celebrate the upcoming 10th Anniversary of SGMA and the progress made with local partnerships and innovative projects to put more water into the ground. Online events will take place March 11-15. We'll kick off the celebration on Monday, March 11 with a webinar featuring DWR Director Karla Nemeth, DWR Deputy Director of Sustainable Groundwater Management, Paul Gosselin and others to talk about the progress made over the first 10 years of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) and how state-local partnerships and innovative projects are putting more water into the ground and helping to ensure current and long-term water supply resiliency for communities, businesses and environmental habitats that are dependent on groundwater.  For more information on the week's activities, download the Groundwater Awareness Week flyer.

DWR is celebrating SGMA with a series of mid-day virtual activities between March 11 and March 15. See details and registration links for each webinar and workshop below. Please direct any questions about these events to sgmps@water.ca.gov.

Join DWR in celebrating the upcoming 10th Anniversary of SGMA on Monday as we kick off Groundwater Awareness Week 2024. You’ll hear from DWR’s Director, Karla Nemeth, and DWR Sustainable Water Management Office Deputy Director, Paul Gosselin about the progress made over the first 10 years of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Our dynamic speakers will also discuss State-local partnerships and innovative projects that are putting more water into the ground, helping to ensure current and long-term water supply resiliency for communities, businesses, and environmental habitats that are dependent on groundwater.

DWR’s Sustainable Groundwater Management (SGMO) staff will also highlight the status of California’s groundwater following multiple years of statewide drought interrupted by a wet year and how California’s highly variable climate can influence what is happening underground. In addition, learn how DWR’s SGMO is providing assistance to local agencies and groundwater managers to help them engage with their communities during SGMA implementation.

GSAs are encouraged to join on Tuesday and Wednesday during Groundwater Awareness Week for tailored and interactive workshops led by a professional facilitator on outreach and engagement topics. Both workshops will include break-out sessions and opportunities to share experiences and learn from others on how to enhance community involvement and relationships. Please note that GSAs are the targeted audience for these two workshops, so registration will be prioritized for these agencies.
