Project: LAX Dunes Habitat Restoration Project

EEM Funded Project Cost: $500,000.00

The LAX Dunes Habitat Restoration Project restored 50 acres of El Segundo blue butterfly habitat within the LAX Dunes Preserve, a 203-acre wildlife preserve adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport.

Through removing invasive plant species and planting native Seacliff Buckwheat, a vital food source for the federally endangered butterfly, the LAX Dunes Preserve provides healthy coastal dune habitat for the largest remaining population of the El Segundo blue butterfly.

The Related Transportation Facility connected with the project was the LAX Master Plan to expand and modernize the airport. Adverse environmental impacts of new facilities and infrastructure improvements included habitat loss. The grant project helped fulfill required mitigation for these impacts by replacing lost habitat units within the LAX Dunes Preserve.
