The Department of Water Resources (DWR) is taking advantage of February storms and increased flexibility in new operating permits for the State Water Project to move more stormwater now for use when dry conditions return.

The State Water Project (SWP) is a system of reservoirs, canals, and pumping plants that was built by the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) in the 1960s to provide water supply, flood control, wildlife habitat, and recreation.

The Department of Water Resources yesterday filed a petition with the State Water Resources Control Board to extend the timeframe to maximize its existing water rights.
