The Lake Oroville C.A.S.T. event provides children with special needs the opportunity to enjoy a day of outdoor recreation and fishing.

Forty children will receive their own fishing rod, reel, and tackle box, commemorative t-shirt, and cap before heading out on Lake Oroville to enjoy fishing with top anglers. They will also learn about boating and water safety, and the preservation of California’s water and environmental resources.

The annual event, held at the Bidwell Canyon Boat Launch facility, is sponsored by the Department of Water Resources (DWR), State Parks and Recreation (DPR), Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal-Fire), Fish and Wildlife (DFW), and the “Catch A Special Thrill” for Kids Foundation.

After a morning of fishing, the young anglers and their families, boat captains and volunteers will be treated to a BBQ luncheon prepared by the Oroville Kiwanis. An awards ceremony will wrap up the day.

The children are from local schools and programs in Butte, Yuba, and Sutter counties. Many of them are participants in Oroville’s annual Special Olympics, while others come from Yuba City’s “Family Soup” organization which provides support to students and families of children with special needs.

The C.A.S.T. program is intended to expand opportunities for young persons with special needs to use and enjoy public land and water throughout State Water Project recreation facilities.

Details of the event are subject to change and updates can be found by visiting the official C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation websiteincluding information on how to register as a shore volunteer or boat captain.
