Demographic Analysis Tools

Economic Analysis Section (EAS) demography staff uses the following tools for demographic and other water data estimation, projection, and visualization

  • Geographic Information System (GIS)
  • GIS is an essential tool for demographic data analysis. To calculate annual urban water demand, EAS demography staff updates annual population estimates at Detailed Analysis Unit (DAU) level for each of the California 58 counties using GIS methods and techniques.

  • Tableau
  • We use Tableau software to visualize the statewide DAU level population trends (July 2000 - July of current year). This data visualization depicts the population splits between two or more counties (or DAUs) by selecting a DAU or a County under filter options. We have done similar data visualizations for other water projects.

  • Disadvantaged Communities (DAC) Mapping Tool
  • The DAC Mapping Tool maps DAC throughout the state at different geographic levels, pursuant to Proposition 1 and Proposition 84 . We provide Integrated Regional Water Management (IRWM) group DAC determination data for the Mapping Tool.

  • Economically Distressed Areas (EDA) Mapping Tool
  • The EDA Mapping Tool maps EDA throughout the state at different geographic levels, pursuant to Proposition 1 . We provide IRWM group EDA determination data for the Mapping Tool.
